This picture shows where a tree has been cut down. Notice how hollow it was. Most of the trees that were cut down were like this or worse. The next bad storm and many tombstones would be broken as these fell.

This tall cedar tree has been hit by lightning several times, causing it to become 'one-sided' and it needs to come down. The problem: how to get it down without damaging any tombstones?

Owen prepares to throw a small rope with a weight on one end over a tree limb. Once it is over a secure limb, he will attach a heavier rope to the other end of the lighter rope and pull the heavier rope over the limb. Now this heavy rope can be used to guide and control where the tree will fall after it is cut.

Owen works on sawing down the tree. Because the tree was so much larger than the saw, he had to cut in sections around the tree.

After the rope was secured in the tree, the other end was taken across the road and looped around a small tree. Then it was attached to Owen's tractor. When Owen had cut almost through the tree, George drove the tractor to pull the tree in the desired direction away from the grave stones.

Now that the tree is on the ground, the work continues to cut the tree into smaller pieces so it will be easier to drag to the brush pile.
