Wythe C. H. Va December the [ ] 18 [ ]
Dear Samuel
I have received yo[ur] letter [ ] and us all well. I was g[lad to] hear that you were well.
Samuel the Gentleman that w[ ] from the South to teach for us here fa[iled[ to come, & will not be here. The neigh[bors[ hearing that you were not a going to return to College again soon, has asked me to [ ] if you would not teach two sessions for the [ ] or more. I could not answer them positively but promised them to advise you to do so if they made a good school for you, which I have no doubt that they will. I think that if the School will be worth $125 or $150 that you ought to gratify them. You can improve yourself & you will be a geting about $250 a year or 10 months we wil say. There is now an article in circulation for you by the Mr. Rosenbaums & others. They all speak well of your qualifications. You will board at home & teach in the School house at the head of Hines Mill Dam.
I will start Wythe on Saturday coming for you on horse back & if you have an opportunity of a Carryall or some other Carriage to [br]ing your trunk I want you not to fail to get [ ] or anything else that you have, I cannot [ ] you into business [ ] at [ ] pay for your [ ] out of the [mo]ney that you have collected, you & Wythe can start as soon as you please after he gets there.
If you want a Certificate from Mr. Collins of your qualifications as a Teacher you had better get it before Wythe gets there, I wish you would get a Certificate even if you do not teach, it will, be of Service if you want to get into business of any kind.

This letter is very interesting since it indicates that Samuel has not yet considered going to medical school. The following year will find Samuel driving cattle to market, see letter 258.
